Are you a writer of non-fiction who wants to get published?
The contemporary marketplace for writers is cutthroat competitive. The publishing industry today takes very few risks and the death of the notorious slush pile of unsolicited manuscripts in acquisition editors' offices makes it ever more difficult and daunting for an author to get published.

It is important to start writing your book with a proposal for a publisher or agent. Publishers today prefer to work with an author in crafting text appropriate for their market. Don't wait until you have written the book before you start looking for a publisher. It is harder to get a contract for a manuscript that is already completed than it is to get a contract for a book concept.

I can help you identify the appropriate publishers in the academic, trade, subsidy, small and independent presses for your book and provide the name and address of the editor at each publisher to send your book prospectus.

I can help you create a successful book prospectus - one that gets a positive response from an acquisitions editor. From experience I know the packaging of your idea makes all the difference to an acquisitions editor. Putting together a package with a letter of query is not easy for most writers. I'll help you think like an editor and publisher so you can create a package they can't afford to ignore.

I can help you prepare your manuscript for publication. My services range from

            coaching the writing process
copyediting for grammar, spelling, style and format
editing content for coherence, clarity and organization
            indexing
            proofreading
            preparing footnotes, references and citations
conformity to Manual of Style (APA, MLA or University of Chicago)

With a Ph.D. from The University of Chicago and two decades of experience researching, writing and publishing under my own name, and teaching, coaching and advising other writers, I can assist you. While I am not a publisher or editor, my knowledge of the industry and current practices makes me an author's advocate. I am not a literary agent and do not expect a commission. I am an independent contractor whose consulting services are engaged by contract at a billable rate of $40/hour after an initial reader's fee and/or retainer of $500.

I am accepting only two new clients in July 2010. References upon request. If you would be interested in learning more about how I can help you get published please call me at 607/387-9100 or email me at jilldswenson@yahoo.com
